To put this into perspective, a fine strand of hair is about 0.10mm in diameter, yet can be thinner still. The unaided human eye, at its lower limit, can discern objects as small as 0.10mm, though this ability depends on factors such as distance, lighting, and background contrast.
Locating the MB2 canal within a tooth presents unique challenges. The access cavity is surrounded by four walls, creating a dim environment often obscured by shadows; especially if access is through a crown or restoration. In such conditions, exceptional magnification and lighting become essential tools for visualising the MB2 canal.
While seasoned clinicians may occasionally identify MB2 without magnification, the process of searching for it, carefully removing just the right amount of dentine, and locating it beneath a dentine shelf, truly demands enhanced visual aids.
For those embarking on this delicate task, beginning with a #08 file is advisable. Its tip is smaller than the MB2 orifice and it should sink into the mb2 orifice when found!
